Ocean Mantle Dynamics
A major NSF planning initiative lead to the publication of the Oceanic Mantle Dynamics Science Plan in July 2000 as well as an implementation plan in 2002. This was almost entirely a seismic initiative calling for large-scale transportable arrays of ocean bottom seismometers to be deployed on the seafloor in a manner similar to EarthScope transportable array. This plan conspicuously did not include mention of MT/CSEM/magnetic observatory components, although these components had previously been part of planning efforts (DEOS, etc.) that led into the Oceanic Mantle Dynamics concept.
There is renewed interest in OMD and it is anticipated that in Spring 2010 there will be a new OMD workshop sponsored by NSF. This forum has been set up as a resource for the EM community to plan for an EM component to OMD.

EM for ocean mantle dynamics
International cooperation is often fruitfull to help convince that EM may be usefull !!! keep us posted
(I mean non-US marine EM)
An excellent point
Non-US participation in OMD is something that should be pursued. It is still early days in the planning process. Perhaps an email to Doug Toomey at Univ. Oregon (drt <<at>> uoregon.edu) who is spearheading the planning workshop, at this point overwhelmingly if not exclusively seismic) expressing interest in non-US investigators in an electromagnetic part of OMD would be very useful right at the start of this process. Do you have any estimate of the total number of marine MT/CSEM instruments available to academics in France and in the rest of Europe?
